Graduate students may be eligible for supplemental on-campus or off-campus employment on a case-by-case basis. All additional employment requires pre-approval by the student adviser and/or Director of Graduate Studies (DGS). Employment must be in compliance with the eligibility and requirements outlined in the Graduate School Employment Policy and Internship Policy. International students must also comply with all rules on the Davis International Center’s employment page or risk violating their visa immigration status. Hourly Graduate Employment Students residing outside the United States are prohibited from hourly student employment. Incoming students are not eligible for hourly student employment until after the completion of Graduate School Orientation. Additional Details by Status U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents U.S citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for up to 10 additional hours per week of supplemental employment, on- or off- campus. International Students International students have additional limitations on their ability to hold employment on- or off-campus, and must comply with all rules on the Davis International Center’s employment page or risk violating their visa immigration status. Davis International Center employment guidance confirms: Total hours: For J-1 and F-1 visa holders sponsored by Princeton, total on-campus employment is limited to 20 hours per week. Assistantships: Assistantships in lnstruction (AI) and Assistantships in Research (AR) appointments are considered to be employment. AI/AR appointments provide prorata salary based on the hours of commitment or service. These hours count toward the 20 total allowable number of employment hours. Please note, full-time AI/AR appointments are considered to be equivalent to 20 hours per week; therefore, students holding them are not eligible for any additional on-campus employment. Off-campus employment: Any off-campus employment needs to be evaluated by the student's adviser/department and the Davis International Center. Visit the External Opportunities page in the Academics section to learn more about off-campus work authorization for international students. School breaks: For international students with full-time AR/AI appointments, additional employment may be permissible during official school breaks. Prior Approval: J-1 students must have prior approval from their adviser at Davis International Center to work on campus. All international students should confer with Davis prior to accepting supplemental employment. Preparing for Work NJ Sick Time Students engaged in hourly employment on-campus are eligible for New Jersey Sick Time. Students accrue one hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours worked.
