Student Aid Recipient Rights and Responsibilities

As a student you have the right to:

  • Know the types of aid programs available to you. This includes all federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs.
  • Know what resources (personal resources, assets, etc.) were considered in the calculation of your financial need.
  • Know how much financial need is being met, as determined by Princeton University.
  • Know the deadlines for submitting applications for all available financial aid programs.
  • Request re-evaluation of your eligibility if your circumstances change.
  • Know the general conditions and terms applicable to student employment and assistantships.
  • Know terms and conditions of any loan you accept including interest rates, repayment amount, length of repayment, and when repayment starts, and the necessity to repay.
  • Know the method by which financial assistance disbursements will be made to you and the frequency of those disbursements.
  • Know the criteria for continued eligibility under each financial aid program.
  • Know your department’s Academic Progress standards that you must meet to receive financial aid and criteria by which you may re-establish aid eligibility.
  • Know the exit counseling information the school provides and collects.

As a student, it is your responsibility to:

  • Reapply for financial aid every year by the specified deadlines.
  • Review and understand the terms of your financial aid award annually.
  • Report all outside financial assistance or additional resources that you receive to the Graduate School
  • Repay any loans you receive.
  • Understand all forms/agreements you are asked to sign as you are responsible for all agreements that you sign.
  • Provide complete and accurate information to the Graduate School. 
  • Provide all documents requested by the Graduate School in a timely manner to avoid a delay in processing your aid.
  • Use financial aid for educationally related expenses.
