Former Degree-Seeking Statuses

Graduated

A status for former students who have completed all requirements for an advanced degree from Princeton University, and whose degree has been conferred by the Board of Trustees of the University.

The degree awarded is recorded on the transcript, and a diploma is issued. Students who graduate with an advanced degree are eligible for certain benefits such as alumni access to libraries and facilities, access to transcripts, and an alumni email account. See the Alumni Association website for a full list of alumni benefits.

Permanently Discontinued

Voluntary Withdrawal

A discontinued status for former students who were in good academic standing and voluntarily chose to terminate degree candidacy by withdrawing from their program of study.

Enrolled students or students still eligible to be enrolled may choose to leave the institution for various reasons. Before making a final decision to withdraw, students should discuss their options with their adviser(s), the department, and the Graduate School. Once a student voluntarily withdraws, they may not return to an enrolled status except by reapplying as a new admit. A voluntary withdrawal is recorded on the transcript.

Termination

A discontinued status for former students whose degree candidacy has been terminated because of failure to meet program requirements.

The Graduate School may terminate a student's degree candidacy for any of the following reasons:

  • A student is not making satisfactory academic or research progress, as outlined by the satisfactory academic progress policy, despite warnings;
  • A student fails to return to enrollment after an approved leave has ended;
  • A Ph.D. student has failed the general examination or final public oral two times;
  • An ET/DCC student has informed the department or the Graduate School of the decision not to complete degree requirements and submit a dissertation; or
  • An ET/DCC student has not been in regular contact with the adviser, committee, or academic department; has not made progress towards completing a degree; and more than five years have passed from the date the student passed the general examination.

Once students are terminated, they may not return to an enrolled status except by reapplying as a new admit. A termination is recorded on the transcript. Terminated students are asked to complete the checkout form via TigerHub.

Expulsion

A discontinued status for former students who have been permanently removed from graduate study at the University and whose degree candidacy has been terminated because of a serious disciplinary matter.

Expelled students may not return to an enrolled status at the University. An expulsion is recorded on the transcript.

Revocation of Degree

A discontinued status for former students whose degree was awarded but then revoked by the Graduate School because of a serious disciplinary matter related to work performed or submitted for the degree.

Students whose degree is revoked may not return to an enrolled status at the University. Revocation of degree is recorded on the transcript.
