The Princeton University Graduate College, dedicated in 1913, was the first in America devoted solely to postgraduate liberal studies. In 1913, Princeton introduced the first residential college in America devoted solely to postgraduate liberal studies. The iconic campus was designed by Ralph Adams Cram in collaboration with the first dean of the Graduate School, Andrew Fleming West. Princeton’s Graduate College is regarded by many as the height of collegiate Gothic style. The campus is instantly recognizable, accented by textured stone, unique sculptural details, and the striking presence of Cleveland Tower. Within the Graduate School’s second tallest tower is a magnificent stained glass window honoring six Princeton graduate students who lost their lives in World War I. Throughout the campus, other architectural details catch the eye, from tiger-shaped gargoyles, to architectural fragments from Oxford and Cambridge.
