Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies
Summer Language Support
PIIRS will support language study at institutions other than Princeton (in the US or abroad) for languages that are not offered at Princeton during the academic year or the summer session, or for advanced training that is not available in Princeton during the academic year or the summer session. PIIRS does not support funding for the Princeton summer language program. PIIRS does not support foreign language study overseas that can be done here at Princeton during the academic year or in the summer.
The application statement for language grants should specify why the study in question is necessary for a student’s research, why this particular program was chosen, how the non-Princeton study builds upon the student’s prior language training. These statements are read quite carefully and need to provide comprehensive answers to these questions. Students who do not provide full information cannot be considered. One letter of recommendation is required. Please send this directly to Audrey Mainzer at amainzer@princeton.edu
Recipients of PIIRS funding will be expected to submit a report on work accomplished during the summer. Reports must be submitted to the main PIIRS office by September 30, 2009.
Costs Supported:
Tuition at other institutions (in the US and abroad), Non-Princeton/Overseas room & board, travel (airfare and local).
Costs Not Supported:
Rental costs, utility costs for rental in Princeton University while student is doing language study either at Princeton or elsewhere. In calculating the contribution that PIIRS can provide for students studying abroad – whether for language or research – we consider 50% of the summer stipend supplied to students by the Graduate School to be available to help defray the expense of summer research or language study.
SUMMER Research – Pre-Dissertation Research and Dissertation Research
Applications are welcome for students who need summer support to investigate field sites, conduct preliminary archival reconnaissance, interview officials, or pursue official permission for research sites, among other activities that will insure a successful dissertation. This category of funding is set aside especially to increase the likelihood that students will be able to write convincing grant proposals to external agencies. It may also be used by students who are close to completing their dissertation fieldwork and require only a short additional stint to bring it to fruition.
For pre-Generals students, PIIRS supports sound proposals for summer pre-dissertation research abroad for graduate students who plan to write a dissertation on a topic related to regional or international studies. Normally, the research will be conducted overseas during the summer following the second year but PIIRS will consider students requiring pre-dissertation funding at a later stage.
For enrolled post-Generals students who have an approved dissertation prospectus, PIIRS supports research in the summer. For those students about to enter into DCE status for the 2009-2010 AY, PIIRS supports research only during the summer of the final year of enrollment.
The application statement for summer funding should be as specific as possible, providing names of archives, who you will interview, the field sites you will investigate and the contribution this research trip will make to (a) the selection of dissertation research sites (b) the ability to apply/complete for external grants; (c) the completion of the thesis of itself (if this is a research trip rather than a planning trip). Two letters of recommendation are required. Please send these directly to Audrey Mainzer at amainzer@princeton.edu
Recipients of PIIRS funding will be expected to submit a report on work accomplished during the summer. Reports must be submitted to the main PIIRS office by September 30, 2009.
