Summer Stipends

Provision for summer support during all years of a student's program is offered to Ph.D. students in humanities and social science departments. For students in these divisions, the on-line application for summer funding must be submitted no later than March 1 at 4:30 p.m. after which time the application will be removed from the website.  Applications will not be accepted after this time.

Summer funding is subject to certain requirements and guidelines. Students who receive this funding are required to submit a report to the Graduate School (attention:  Kit Chandler) by the last working day of September each year in order to be eligible for future funding.

Students in the natural sciences and engineering are normally supported through their academic departments.

All students are encouraged to apply to various external sources, plus internal (University) programs and centers in order to supplement Graduate School funds, especially if they are travelling abroad and/or conducting expensive research.

This year, there will be no cap placed on the total amount of funds that a student can receive from all sources. Humanities and social science students who are eligible for Graduate School funding will receive $2,000 monthly at the end of July and August 2008, and are also eligible for other funds as they are awarded to them from external and other non-Graduate School sources (for example, the various academic programs which distribute funds, or the student's own department).  The only requirement is that the student must work full-time on his/her academic studies during the summer, and s/he cannot be employed for more than 20 hours in any given week even if that work is for the University.
