Fulbright IIE

Predoctoral grants administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) for U.S. citizens who must pursue dissertation research in foreign countries with which the U.S. has diplomatic relations. Most students apply for one country, although graduate students may propose a multi-country project, provided that the countries selected are within the same geographic region. Several sponsors use the Fulbright completion to choose their fellows. You must be a U.S. citizen and must have proficiency in the language of the host country/ies to which you are applying. You must submit a complete application (including three letters of recommendation, a language proficiency report, transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work, and a project statement). Recommendations, language references, and transcripts may be sent directly to the Office of Academic Affairs at 111 Clio Hall where your application file will be assembled.

IIE requires universities to conduct a campus screening process and evaluate all Fulbright applicants. Therefore, it is mandatory for you to have an interview with David Redman. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, before you submit the final application. Dean Redman prefers to meet with you after you have completed drafts of your project statement and curriculum vitae and have given him copies to review for the meeting. You are encouraged to arrange for an appointment late in August or early in September when you return to campus.
Normally, proficiency in the language of the host country, sufficient for the research proposed is required. There are some special Fulbright-IIE programs, however, designed for professional study and science and engineering students who have little or no experience in the language of the country they propose to visit. France, for example, sponsors short-term scientific missions for which no French language proficiency is required. Come to 111 Clio Hall for more details or consult IIE's website for detailed information and online application.
