Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Research Abroad
These grants offer support for dissertation research for U.S. citizens and permanent residents in modern foreign languages and area studies. Absolute preference is given to research projects which focus on Africa; East Asia; Eastern Europe and Russia; the Near East; South Asia; Southeast Asia; and the Pacific, or the Western Hemisphere. Additionally, competitive preference is given to those applications which meet the following priority; projects which focus upon the Caribbean Basin, including one or more of the following countries: Mexico, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, and the island nations of the Caribbean Sea, and which emphasize the following disciplines or types of activity; research projects in the fields of economics, geography, history (except Mexico), political science, sociology, and languages not commonly taught in the United States. Applications that propose projects focusing exclusively on Western Europe and/or ancient, medieval, or pre-modern topics will not be considered eligible.
The application requires a statement of research, an up-to-date curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (one must be from your dissertation advisor), graduate transcripts (not undergraduate), and a language proficiency form for each major foreign language to be used in the research. You must prepare a detailed budget. The project can be multi-country if necessary (e.g. Egypt, Syria, and Turkey; or Japan and Taiwan). Applications are quickly eliminated from the competition if all the criteria listed on the request for proposal are not addressed. Students should try to stay close to ten double-spaced pages for the statement of proposed research.
