GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

You are required to submit valid General Test scores from Educational Testing Serice (ETS). Please note that GRE scores expire after five years from your original test date and will not be available from ETS. Refer to the departmental requirements to determine if a Subject Test is required. Although the Graduate School does not have a minimum score requirement each department may have set their own.

When registering for the test, you must request that your scores be sent to Princeton University, institution code 2672. Department codes are not used at Princeton, if you are required to select a code choose one closest to your interest. In addition, you can upload a copy of your score report in the additional information section of the electronic application.  Please note that copies of scores are NOT official and we still require the official scores sent directly from ETS.

Allow several weeks for test scores to reach the University, the Graduate Admission Office will update your submitted application checklist when the scores are received. To ensure timely receipt of GRE scores, applicants are urged to take the paper exam in October, or the computer-based test no later than December 1. An application is considered incomplete without these scores.

Testing for Citizens of China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan

Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers the GRE exam in the fall for citizens of China, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan for tests taken within these countries. If you are a citizen of one of these countries but will be taking the test outside the listed countries this does not effect you.

The analytical writing portion of the GRE exam must be taken in advance of the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE. For more information and test dates please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section on the ETS website.

The verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE General test must have been taken by the end of October in order to be reported to Princeton in time for admission consideration. This test is administered as a paper-based test, although the scores are received electronically by Princeton directly from ETS.
