Degree Requirements: Doctor of Philosophy

Princeton University doctoral degree candidates have the following requirements:

  • A residence requirement of one full academic year.
  • Departmental pre-generals requirements, including languages (human or computer); research papers or a research requirement; preliminary, cumulative, or qualifying examinations.
  • Successfully passing a general examination (set by the department).
  • Preparation of an acceptable doctoral dissertation, which must show that the candidate has achieved technical mastery of his or her field and is capable of doing independent research, and which must enlarge or modify what was previously known or present a significant new interpretation of known materials.
  • Successfully presenting an oral defense of the dissertation in a final public oral examination.
